Buddleja davidii from Yunnan W/O-9270
100 small seeds per packet.
The seeds we offer have been harvested from a plant grown by us from seed collected by August Wu and Bjørnar Olsen in Cangshan, Dali, Yunnan, China at 2780 metres. This rather magnificent B. davidii popped up in a packet of W/O B. myriantha seeds!
Buddleja davidii is a highly variable species in the wild and previously there were a variety of named subspecies. However, the taxonomy of the plant has changed and these are now all classed as synonyms, considering them to be within the natural variation of the species.
This resplendent rogue might easily at one time have been called Buddleja davidii var. superba, which fits this plant perfectly, having very long, drooping, beautiful and strongly scented inflorescences. This is however more likely to be a B. davidii hybrid and we are thinking B. delavayi might be one of its parents. As in B. delavayi its perfume is very rose like, there is a bulge in the corolla tube that we can only find in illustrations in the Flora of China, the eye is more of an orange colour and this was collected in Dali, Yunnan where it is also in its range ... we can only speculate and will probably never know!
Flowering late summer to late autumn. Height 1.5 metres. Humus rich, well-drained soil in sun to part shade.
PLEASE NOTE:
This plant was flowering very late compared to our others so its a real possibility if it isn't a hybrid that seeds should come true but we can't guarantee that.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
Sow from March to June. Surface sow small seeds thinly, press in gently and keep top of pot moist. Keep pot warm at 15 to 20°C until germination, then move to somewhere cooler.
Carefully prick out seedlings when they have developed true leaves and are large enough to transplant to individual pots to grow on.
