Vincetoxicum hirundinaria White Swallow Wort
20 seeds per packet.
A rarely grown and unusual perennial plant that is native to Europe and Asia. Produces small, white, scented, starry flowers on top of 60 cm shoots in July to September. I've been championing Vincetoxicum species for a long time but because of its name it's hardly likely to be popular or in your local Dobbies anytime soon! Vincetoxicum in Latin means ‘conqueror of poison’ and comes from the traditional use of this plant as an antidote to poisons and snakebites. The species name hirundinaria (from hirundo meaning swallow) and the common name White Swallow Wort refer to its seedpods, which are evocative of a swallow's wing or tail. When ripe the pods spill open with silky haired parachutes to send the seeds on their way. Sun to part shade in humus rich, well-drained soil.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
Sow from March to June. Cover seed thinly, press in gently and keep top of compost from drying out. Keep pot warm at 15 to 20°C until germination, then move to somewhere cooler.
Carefully prick out seedlings when they have developed true leaves and are large enough to transplant to individual pots to grow on.
