A tall plant that is native to the woodlands of China, Myanmer, Thailand and Vietnam. A highly variable species with flower colour ranging from deep red, orange-red, orange and even yellow but most having green flower tips. It produces whorls of narrow, lanceolate leaves and nodding flower bells which are borne in clusters off each leaf axil in summer, followed by red berries in autumn. Plants have been grown from seeds by us from a red and green flowered plant with a mottled stem. Height 1 to 3 metres. Part sun to part shade in humus rich, moist, well-draining soil. Not as hardy as some species so plant in a more sheltered spot with a winter mulch.
