Large rosettes of thick, toothed, pubescent leaves and tall spikes bearing purple, thistle-like florets in July to August. Its root is widely used in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine. Height to 2 metres. Sun to part shade in a moist, well-drained, deep, rich soil. Warm germinator.
