A hardy, perennial species that is native to the forests of the eastern Himalayas and rare in cultivation. Forms quite a tall plant from a herbaceous rootstock and produces delicate, purple, orchid-like flowers with long, curling spurs and dark green leaves with scalloped edges. This species has very distinctive patterned stems. Height up to 100 cm. Moist, humus rich, well-drained soil in part to full shade in a cool position. Can be pot grown or planted in the garden. Hardy to -10 C (possibly more) in the ground with a winter mulch. If pot grown, it requires full protection from frosts.
