An unusual and attractive Japanese selection of the species with toothed, variegated, white and green leaves. It was found, introduced and named by Cedric Basset. 'Hekiga' means 'fresco' in Japanese. As its species name suggests, it produces bulbils in the leaf axils in autumn (see photo 4). These bulbils later fall to the ground and grow into new plants. A member of the Urticaceae family with stems that have very fine, stinging hairs - the stinging sensation is quite sharp but this does not last long. Height 50 to 150cm. Moist but well-drained, humus rich soil in part to full shade.
