A tuberous, climbing perennial in the Polygonaceae family that is native to central China. Produces triangular, heart-shaped leaves with purple-red markings on the young leaves and small, starry, white flowers on long stalks, followed by attractive, winged nutlets. Although not edible, this species is used in traditional Chinese medicine. Flowering July to September. Height 3 metres. Part shade in moisture retentive, well-drained soil.
