A herbaceous perennial with creeping rhizomes that is native to wet ground on the margins of rivers, ponds, ditches and rice paddies in lowland China and Japan. Produces erect stems carrying tapering towers of starry, white flowers that appear from June to August. Height 70 cm. Sun to part shade in moisture retentive soil. Grows well in heavy clay soil.
