Persicaria runcinata ‘Yunnan Giant’
As we have suspected for many years and has very recently been confirmed, this plant was introduced into cultivation from a wild collection in Yunnan in 2003 by Charles Boulanger and, sometime in its nursery life in the UK, its history has been erased and it has been given the cultivar name 'Purple Fantasy' (and a rather silly one at that!). We have given it back its original name. So if you want to buy this plant but already have 'Purple Fantasy', be warned that they are the very same plant. Forms clumps of extremely attractive, arrow-shaped, hairy leaves with a v-shaped, purple and silver band (larger than the normal P. runcinata hence the 'Giant'), and white flower heads from summer into late autumn. It can be a vigorous, spreading plant in milder climates. Height 90 cm. Average to moist, well-drained soil in sun to light shade.
