A collector's plant and one of the most unusual species of Asarum, now considered to be extinct in its native region of the forests of Kyushu, Japan. An evergreen, clump-forming species with glossy, heart-shaped leaves marked in silver and with the most amazing and variably coloured but predominantly black and white-outlined flowers that are funnel shaped and sit at ground level with three extraordinary outstretched petals measuring up to 10 cm long. Flowering April to May. Can be grown in the garden or as a potted specimen in moist but well-drained, humus rich soil in dappled shade.
