A hardy, perennial species that is native to China and is very rare in cultivation. It came to us as an unidentified species introduced by Patrick Blanc from a nursery in Kyoto, Japan. Produces deep green, thick, glossy, serrated leaves and large, pale pink, orchid-like flowers with curling spurs in late autumn. Height 20 to 40 cm. Moist, humus rich, well-drained soil in part to full shade in a cool position. Proven hardy with us to -12 C in the ground with a thick winter mulch but if pot grown it requires full protection from frosts.
