Equisetum giganteum ‘El Tabacal’ Giant Horsetail
A collection from El Tabacal in Argentina’s northern province of Salta. In the wild, it forms clumps of over 10 feet in height but sadly here in the UK it has so far produced only very thin branches up to 50 cm in height. It has proven frost hardy for us to -8C but, to gain size, it demands plenty of warmth and space (a heated greenhouse should help to attain a more robust specimen). A vigorous, spreading species, best planted in a container and kept in permanently moist soil or grown as a pond marginal in sun to part shade.
