Begonia sinensis 'Red Undies' BWJ8011 Available April 2022
A hardy, tuberous, woodland species from China collected by Bleddyn Wynn-Jones that produces green leaves with attractive, dark red undersides and pendulous, pink flowers. The leaves of this species are more angular than Begonia grandis, which it closely resembles. The plant’s stems on this selection are attractive having red nodes that produce bulbils in the autumn, these fall to the ground to produce new plants. Comes into growth quite late in the season. Flowering July into autumn. Height 30 cm. Full to part shade in a sheltered position in moist, humus rich, well-drained soil with a winter mulch.
