A rhizomatous, herbaceous, hardy perennial from China with surprisingly dark, almost black stems that bear pyramidal panicles of dainty, spidery, yellow flowers from August to September. Also produces attractive, fluffy, brown seed heads for winter interest. Height 1 to 1.5 metres. Full sun to part shade in well-drained, moisture retentive soil.
