A rare and very attractive foliage plant that is native to shady, moist places in evergreen and broad-leaved mixed forests or near streams in south eastern Xizang, China, Bhutan, northern India and Nepal. Produces attractive clumps of elliptical shaped, ribbed, bright green leaves on erect, purple-black stems and white panicles of tiny, white flowers in the leaf axils in autumn. Stays evergreen in warm climates or if kept potted in a greenhouse over winter. A member of the Urticaceae family that does not sting. Height 70 cm. Moist, humus rich soil in part to full shade. Hardy to -10 C.
