The plants we offer have been grown from seed collected in České středohoří, Czech Republic at 320 metres. This herbaceous perennial in the Asteraceae family is native to rocky, dry areas in central and southern Europe, has smooth, greyish-green leaves and produces violet-blue flowers, which are a favourite with bees from April to August. This wild lettuce has an abundant white latex (hence the Latin name of the species, lactuca, meaning milk) containing the substance lactucarium which has many medicinal properties but the plant should be used with caution. Height 60 cm. Well-drained, sandy loam in sun.
