Saxifraga stolonifera 'Nezu Jinja'
50 seeds per packet.
A stunning form of the Japanese native Saxifraga stolonifera that was discovered in the wild in the Nezu district of Tokyo by Cedric Basset. Compared with typical forms, it produces enormous leaves and its green base is highlighted by an intricate tracery of silver veins. It is also more vigorous and soon forms a solid mat of ground cover via fine, red stolons with little plantlets at the tips. In summer the plants are adorned with masses of beautiful, pinky-white, starry flowers. Height 20 cm. Moist, well-drained soil in part to full shade although the plant is tolerant of poor soils. Perfect for a spot in a shady rock or woodland garden and an excellent choice for underplanting or as a potted specimen.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
Sow from autumn to spring. Surface sow small seeds thinly, press in gently and keep top of pot moist. Keep pot outdoors or in cold frame over winter. Seeds germinate in spring.
Alternatively, if seeds can’t be sown in autumn or early spring use the following method: mix seeds with damp vermiculite and place inside a ziplock bag, keep bag somewhere warm for 3 weeks, then place in fridge (not freezer) for 8 weeks. Next spread mixture on top of a pot, thinly cover with compost or grit and keep warm at 15 to 20°C until germination, then move to somewhere cooler.
Carefully prick out seedlings when they have developed true leaves and are large enough to transplant to individual pots for growing on.
